3. Of course Rachel doesn’t die. She’s probably the most innocent character in the whole series and hasn’t done anything outside of being possessed by a crazy snake lady. Also she is adorable and the death of an innocent child is probably a little too heavy for a shounen anime like Soul Eater

I also agree with Raiinu K.D that I’d rather have an improvised ending than a year of filler episodes and then having the main plot advance. When the manga is complete or at least a lot further in, they can do a new series or an OVA like they’re doing with Fullmetal Alchemist and Hellsing. (Although Gonzo did the Hellsing tv series, not Bones )

“kodomo” is japanese for child. she said “you are my child” that was the subber’s choice for gender, so Crona’s gender is never specified. I hope this helps and people read this and learn. ^_^

… Why does everyone care so much about Crona’s gender? He/She’s a really great character, and he/she helps a lot with plot growth, doesn’t he/she? Also – and please, if this offends anyone because I’m simply ’stupid’ or ‘a know-it-all’ or anything of the sort, please ignore this post [ : – on quite a few ‘Soul Eater’ sites that I have been on in the past few weeks, there are usually some kind of statement – if you search hard enough – stating that, Crona does not HAVE a gender, he/she is simply a character that helps further the plot. Whether or not this is because there is no need for Crona to be a specific gender, or because the creator of the anime has decided to leave his/her gender ’secret’ for some reason, and is planning to reveal at a different time, I couldn’t tell ya’. But I just read all of the above comments and everyone is either ‘What’s Crona’s gender?!’ or bitching about other people who have tried to answer the question. :\ And – maybe this is a little TOO ‘high and mighty’ like – but I don’t really like pointless bitching and screaming, and that’s what that was, and I thought ‘hey, maybe I could help solve the conflict?’. Crona is never referred as a boy or girl. in a couple sentences before, it also referred Crona as a girl. In the actual spoken word, it was adressed as “ko.” ko is japanese for child. onnanoko, is girl. if you listen to the sentence and hear that word, tell me.

I know a good amount of japanese; at least enough to know that i am surely correct. If you want to argue, before you do, ask another person fluent in japanese. I really dont appreciate people arguing with someone who knows japanese and didnt have to read the sub to understand.

But yes, to support the arguement, Medusa does, and always has, called Crona “Watashi no Ko.”
This translates literally to “My child”. Not “My daughter” as I’ve seen so many fansubbers do. They just do that to enforce their opinion on those who can’t understand japanese.

Crona hasn’t been revealed as a girl yet. When fighting Maka he says ‘I don’t know how to deal with GIRLS’ which I doubt a girl would say. Ragnarok picks on Crona as if he was a boy. Noogies? On a GIRL??? When Medusa refers to Chrona, we don’t know if she says daughter or not and unless you can read or understand Japanese no one can say whether its a boy or girl by just relying on what a Scanlator or Subber writes. They could write whatever the hell they want or believe. If Crona was a girl why would she be the only girl without any BREASTS? The dress, which is a dumb reason if anybody has seen Zatch Bell (watch it if you don’t know what I’m talking about) will understand. At the party he wore trousers while EVERY other girl wore a dress. If Crona’s Seiyu is a girl why is it she is trying to sound more masculine. Like Black Star’s Seiyu

Honestly he seems more of an androgynous character than a female. Heck, he might not even be a girl OR boy. Its pretty obvious the writer enjoys confusing us. But unless you have hints or evidence as convincing, don’t bother saying he is definitely a certain gender. For me the only thing that hints he is a girl is the dress as a kid, but again, watch Zatch Bell and the dress will mean nothing

Impersonating an adminstrator? That’s bad. Of course, admin is nice so your lucky. Anyone with a short fuse or anyone from forums period would use your I.P. Address and ban you from the site for breaking the rules (one rule being no impersonation of any members, Mods or Admins), meaning access to the site would cause a 404 error from the ip address in question, meaning you can’t see any episodes, can download music, can’t read manga, can’t post comments, etc. I’ve seen it done and also have done it on Games4win, yugioh, and many more forums (though I’m usually a Moderator, I was only an adminstrator in my forum, which I had to shut down )

To continue my last comment, I know this isn’t a forum so don’t bother trying to point that out to me but still. Then again this comment thing appears to have converted into a forum type function by the people posting.

Its simple. The key to knowing the answer isn’t in the character design (have you seen some of these anime guys?) but in the speech. His use of “boku” in refering to himself is something that only guys, and hardcore girls that want to be guys, do.

I feel, and I hope, that Crona is a girl. If Crona was a boy, it would make for a weak, boring character. Inferno – Crona states that she/he doesn’t know how to act around girls, most likely, because she/he has had no contact with them. All Crona has, really, is Ragnarok, who plays the bullying older brother character. Masculine. That is all Crona knows how to be, as Crona has only had true ‘contact’ with Ragnarok. The ‘dress’ is more of a pilgrim style witch garment, so the “Crona is female” debate should not stem from that; the argument is too weak.

As for girls not being ‘bullied’ and getting noogies? Eh? Is that sexist, or something? Should girls be treated like frail, brittle characters all the time? Sisters get picked on by their older brothers all the time. Boys pick on girls like that in playgrounds if they have hidden affections for them. Crona doesn’t have breasts – so what? Some girls have tiny chests – Maka has no breasts, yet she’s around the same age as Crona. If we were to go into that debate, have a gander at Crona’s hips. They part wider than a male’s should, seeming far more feminine.

I would like to believe that Crona is female, simply because it would be more interesting. A withdrawn tomboy character is hard to come by in anime. =3 But then again, it’s only my humble wish and more opinion; others are free to believe whatever they like~! ;3

I really want to see the next ep. I have really never felt greatful for takin japanese school for every sat for 6 hours before, man i feel good. Also for all you alchemist fans theres been a rumor that theres gonna be a second series which me personally i really am excited for. I know I was a bit of a smart-ass, but please, please, I really dislike it when people think the sub is going to be correct every time. And yes, Richard You, I’m still studying Japanese and when they start going on and on and on the words do get mushed together, though in the watashi and anata sentences are a lot easier once you hear them a lot.

Unfortunatly….I do not know enough Japanese to be anything like a subber, because in lectures, or what I call lectures, like at the start of episode 43, I get very lost T-T I wish I could watch it raw….

My thoughts on Chrona’s gender are that I don’t really care which sex he is but I’m in the habit of refering to Chrona as a male because that’s what I originally thought. If it ever says his gender for sure I’ll refer to him by whatever it is.

@ A dood: I think you might have it backwards. In the anime, they say Crona’s a girl. In the manga, s/he has no specific gender. ‘Boku’ is fairly gender-neutral. Although it’s more commonly used by guys, there are girls who use it.

Admin, I am very thankful for this site and I do like how you let people post pretty much whatever because you think that we all deserve to be heard. And I mean, that is our right in the first amendment. But really, Ghost is being a bit extreme. I understand that everyone has a right to their opinion, that our freedom of speech is important, but even freedom of speech has it’s limitations. People can get fined for cussing in real life if someone actually bothers to report it. So, while still making sure we are heard, maybe it’d be a good idea to Limit certain things such as cussing.
Hope that you will take this into consideration.
Either way, I’m sure you’ll do what’s best for your site. Afterall. It is YOUR site.

I’m more referring to methods Ragnarok uses to bully Crona, its not a common boy bullies girl relationship, I’m not being sexist, well, I’m not trying to be, but its not often you see boys giving girls a noogie. Anyways, if I’m being sexist aren’t you for saying that if Crona was a boy he’d be a boring character? However that’s not my only argument of course. If he didn’t have contact with people, isn’t that what he would say? If Crona said ‘I don’t know how to deal with boys’ I’d think he is a girl as well. But in that position a girl wouldn’t say ‘I don’t know how to deal with girls’ well it isn’t normal at least. She would use the term ‘other people’ since that is what she should be referring to right? But the contact thing is invalid since before that event Crona and Ragnarok already ate over 100 human souls. I don’t think he said that because of his lack of contact.

As for your ‘Maka has no breasts’ theory, that is wrong. It may depend on the angle usually but a good example is at the party or when she is at home, you can actually see Maka has curves, AND MAKA DOES HAVE BREASTS. Still don’t believe me? Take a look at 04:49 on THIS ep , they look like breasts to me… You need a good eye to notice these details, it helps a bit because I do Art but when I look at Crona in any angle, NO chest AT ALL. I’m not using that as stone wall proof it’s just what I noticed. This trumps your ‘hips’ argument and in the same party, Crona is wearing trousers and his hips looked pretty normal to me, they only seem bigger when he wears that dress.

But as I said before Crona might not be any gender. Or the writer probably doesn’t know himself so he just uses Crona to confuse people. Or maybe I’m not looking hard enough for evidence that suggests he is a girl but the only evidence I still have is the dress as a kid and… Well nothing, he might be, but nobody has given me a good reason why. Its just ‘I think Crona is a girl’ or ‘She wears a dress’ which is pretty DUMB. There has got to be a better reason than that, isn’t there?

Both sides of the Chrona-gender argument are valid, which makes me believe even more that Chrona’s gender is not meant to be known. The subber’s put that Medusa calls Chrona her daughter, but I do believe some japanese-speakers clarified this to be a false (in..was it ep 44 comments?) I don’t really know myself. Chrona uses Boku. I’ve been pondering why the whole day, and the only reason why I would think the creator would want Chrona to be an ‘it’ would be because of the fact that Chrona is a demon sword user. She stood, at least in my mind, for someone on the brink of turning into a demon god and through Maka (friendship) she is able to come back and become stronger mentally. That act itself is a powerful message which becomes even stronger when there is no gender ties. It could be anyone coming back from the darkness.
At least that’s what I’ve come up with. xD

On the subject of Chrona, I refer to he(r) as completely ambiguous, and some of the arguments as (s)he being a girl can be easily argued:
Dress: Medusa doesn’t care much about Chrona, so she probably has he(r) wear the simplest clothing possible to save on money.
Flat Chest: While there are girls that are flat chested, guys are as well.
Curves: Anyone can seem to have curves if you have them wear the right clothes.
Female voice: Some guys can easily sound like a girl, especially if they haven’t hit puberty. At the same time, female voice actors usually voice act for characters that aren’t quite adults, thus the female-esque voice.
Being referred to as ’she’: It’s quite simple if you think about it. As previously stated, the japanese used for Chrona is Gender-neutral. These subtitles are not official ones by the creators themselves, otherwise, ‘it’ or ‘child’ would probably come up. For more info, look it up on the wiki.
And lastly, the Pink hair: there are male characters with ‘girlish’ colors for hair in anime.
Sure these arguments sound like I’m arguing that Chrona is male, but i’m proving the point that (s)he can be just as much male as female. So stop arguing that Chrona is one gender!
Now on the subject of subbing, why don’t we have a team here of people that know japanese, and they all work on subbing the episode all at once? That way, when it does get released, it will likely be as much as the sub-date says, perhaps sooner.

The 2nd (ep 28) Black Star got his ass kicked. I don’t remember one successful attack he did. Even that flashy Demon Blade didn’t work

In this one I think either Black Star would win to even things out, the fight would end in a draw, or they get interrupted

Chrona is definetly a girl. I think we have all established that Ragnrok is a boy, and back in an episode some time ago, Ragnarok tried to lift up Chrona’s skirt. Key word being SKIRT. So either Ragnarok is gay or Chrona is a transvestite.

Anyways, it seems kinduv hard to me to build up to a decent ending in like 5 episodes now, I mean it’s barely building up to anything. Compared to other anime of the same format (51 eps) like FMA, it should be getting way more intensity by now. Okay, I guess the black blood kicked back in, yada, yada… but still, that was absolutely pathetic. Crona should by all rights be dead.

At any rate, the first half was great. The fighting was great… and I’m honestly glad to see Stein back. But the way they went about resolving the whole thing was just so BAD!

A far better ending would’ve been having Maka, forced to make a decision of whether to stop Medusa or save Rachel, pull off the Demon Hunter, slicing both Medusa and cute lil’ Rachel right in half, saving her friends, but severely damaging her sanity. Too violent and sad? Okay, fine!

How about Mary punches Medusa out of Rachel and THEN Maka slices her spirit in half! Frick, man! “Only harms evil” my ass! What, were those pillars evil? How in the hell does an attack determine ‘good and evil!’

At any rate, pretty weak. I hope the series picks up before the end.

In most animes it’s true the people can depict the difference between the characters and what their gender is but in this case it is a bit confusing, I have no doubt the writers know what they are doing but for the viewers to know for sure, I doubt that. Crona does things that both genders do, for example the ragnarok lifting thing, Crona did pull down like a girl in embarrassment but he also lifted Maka’s skirt and she didn’t do that, she hit crona. Another example is the party at shibusen, Crona dressed in a white suit, That doesn’t really mean much but all the boys were dressed in suits or casual clothes and the girls were dressed in dresses and female clothes, that implies crona could be a boy, or a girl just wearing a suit or maybe butch (not likely) plus look at the way Blackstar was treating Crona unlike anybody else. The only thing that can comfirm the gender of this character is the show who like likes crona or if crona goes to the bathroom, which door crona walks through or something of that revealing nature. Now don’t anybody post any dirty comments about what I just said, keep it to yourself if your thinking like that.

Let’s recap this episode. Maka goes on a pis angst run, Chrona almost dies (the highlight) and Stein makes his long awaited return leaving everything once again to inexperienced unimpressive Maka (pis move). So far the only enjoyable part of this episode was the upcoming rematch fight with blackstar and mifune. Hopefully the one after that will show some more Kid and we can all forget about Maka for the remaining episodes. (Unrealistic wish) But can’t blame me for hoping.

Okay. To give my answer to the whole, why did the anti demon thing cut through the pillars. If I recall correctly, they said that that attack would wouldn’t hart Rachel because her soul wasn’t evil. Therefore, it doesn’t harm living creatures that aren’t evil. Let’s crack this down.

Medusa=living Witch…=Evil
Pillar=inanimate object. nothing protects it because it is not human and therefore does not have a soul. the attack will not harm an innocent soul. Pillar has no soul, so the rules don’t apply to it. Therefore, subject to damage.

Oh, and Mary didn’t do the attack before because there was only her and Chrona against Stein and Medusa. Stein, if everyone recalls, was doing pretty good against her so she didn’t really get the chance to focus enough to do that. However, two people distracting him would give her more time to focus herself for the attack and also get closer to him to actually use it. That’s my thoughts on that.

Nice thought, but she easily could have hit Stein with it back before he lost it enough to actually fight back.
I can’t see how anyone can’t see how the writers just pulled that out of their ass to solve the whole Stein thing before the end of the series. Stein is my favourite character, and it’s great to have him back. I just wish they didn’t pull the super-lame “old-character-has-sudden-ability” crap.

Thanks for supporting me on the “Crona should be dead” side. That took every scrap of emotion that existed in the episode, mixed it with the One Piece dub, and smashed it into the last nonsensical episode of .hack//Legend of Twilight. This episode makes almost as little sense as the 1980s Transformers cartoon.

I agree with what your saying but I guess the witchhunter is just an enhanced version of a scyhthe so it does the damage a scythe would do normally. But since Demon Hunter requires so much energy and concentration just to summon it, sustain it and use it for what appears to be one slash, maybe it’s not meant to be swung at an average person but if ever a good/average person were to get in the way of the attack, I guess that person would be unaffected. Of course all of this could be bullsh*& XD.

Recapping the Crona Gender Topic once more, regardless if this topic is getting old or not, people continue to post and as long as that happens I’ll keep updating the opinion count . So far the count is:

Choice A) says 7-8 because I’m including my vote now, I think Crona is a boy just raised like a girl by medusa. Crona’s hair is a Purple/Pink color but so is that character from one piece. Acts cowardly because was never taught properly how to face fears (In fact, created a second personality that was not sane and would kill anything just to be safe or away from it). Crona’s feelings toward Maka seem more like a loving relation feeling that a friendship feeling (you can see that at the party, and almost every episode crona’s in, especially this one), I would be surprised that soul doesn’t get jelous from the way Maka acts toward and about Crona but I remember he said he doesn’t feel that way about Maka. I don’t know whatelse to write for now, besides this post is long already .

also infinity the Deamon hunter had only been used once before by accident so how would they have time to explain the effects of it? i would understand what you mean if they had been using it the entire series but apparently only stien knew the ability she had and he was being affected by insanity (oh yeah btw. stien is a beast). so even if it is a kinda “lame” plot twist it still works just as well as any other plot twist. another thing like this is the fact that cid is dead but he fights like every other episode. so you really cant define an anime by its plot twists because there’s no way to dictate a valid explination to many of the things in it. probably the only reason im defending this episode is because stien was brought back but hey…. idc

also note… the attack is called the deamon hunter… not the “cut down everything that appears in front of the damn blade hunter” =D

Ok, one thing about Chrona taking the blade: It’s a bit simple on why Chrona survived: The blade itself could have just as easily missed vital organs. If anything, Chrona may have merely lost a lot of blood, leaving it in a barely alive state. Besides, there weren’t only Bleach Characters who have been in worse situations. Chrona was merely pulling a Cloud. Now, Ragnarok on the other hand…. That may be a different story.

And Something tells me that Medusa isn’t quite dead, cause this is the second time she ‘died’ and her soul didn’t even remotely appear. Unless the Demon Hunter had completely obliterated her soul, it’s likely that she still may be alive through one of her snakes somewhere… Probably adding to the Chrona’s Alive theory at some point.

This episode had some serious potential, but they ruined by–as most anime do–just throwing nonsense in for the heros can survive and have a happy ending. Shit, take lessons from Naruto. Atleast they had the balls to kill off favorites (*sniff* like Kakashi…that was a proper death for you. It suited you and your past..)!

Crona should be dead. Sacrificing yourself so your first and best friend can survive is heroic. They should’ve left it at that. Crona finally experienced the joy of protecting someone she (<—-this is my opinion on the gender thing) loves. If they were going to do this, why did they have her [fatally] injured in the first place? It seemed they had a trail of thought, and then abandoned it at the last moment. It is stuff like this that keeps the show from achieving greatness. They had the perfect chance to do real drama, but they hesitated and let the opportunity pass them by. Pathetic.

—- And don’t use Bleach as an example of what is survivable. It is worse than Dragon Ball Z because they actually do get fatally wounded. Anyway, Shinigami are more resilient and less mortal than Humans in Bleach.

Maka’s anti-demon wavelength. It seemed they altered it. Last I checked, inanimate objects aren’t evil. No matter how you look at it, Soul Eater (or just Stein and Maka and Soul) contradicted itself with that. Anyway, isn’t Evil subjective? I considered Maka evil for having such a sickeningly hypocritical personality. Hell, the entire staff of Shibusen is evil. Most of the students are too. Fucking racist. Kill the wi– Nevermind. They should’ve kept it at a superior version of the anti-’witch’ wavelength instead of adding the self-rightous holy attribute to it. Fucking disgrace.

Aside from the action, this episode was a fucking joke. I’d rather spend a week with Excaliber than watch the ‘drama’ and ‘development’ of this episode again. It is a deceitful thing. It promised me sweets, but when I got close, it threw shit in my face. Not nice at all. This episode showed the mediocracy of the writers. The only positive thing I have to say about is that it got me psyched for the next episode. Black Star vs. Mifune. Finally. The battle was unbelievably awesome in the manga (and considering I don’t much care for un-animated fight sequnces, you know it was good), and I have no doubt it will be great animated.

There are things about Chrona that make it seem like it’s a male, but there are more things that make her seem like a female.

I just assume Chrona is a girl. xD Though she kept making me switch my opinions throughout the anime. Bah, I don’t care what gender Chrona is, she’s still one of my favorite characters.

I strangely don’t love most of the main characters except for Kid, Liz and Patty. (I don’t hate the characters like Maka, Tsubaki, Black Star, ect, they just don’t appeal to me a lot for some reason…)

I like the side characters such as Ox+Havar and Kilik+Thunder+Fire. xD They were so awesome in the manga where they infiltrated the castle and the encounter with Kim and Ox. I wonder if this happens in the anime? I hope so, but it seems unlikely now. Anyway-

Okay.. as many of you I was confused if Crona is a boy or a girl… but if you watch the subtitles, you can see Crona is mentioned with “he”, meaning Crona should be a boy

actually the writter of soul eater, Atsushi Okubo, doesnt even know if its a boy or a girl..in most subtitles it says “it” and it goes around fron “he”and “she”. however the new english dubbed soul eater episodes say that crona is a He. im taking the dubbed advice and saying that crona is a he..
