It’s very hard to tell the difference, besides the fact that they say it once or twice. But pay attention to the “kids” voice, then listen to maka’s (two different ages of course) but there’s a vocal / pitch difference.

If you look up the English voice actor for Chrona, its actually listed as a female, so it could be easily argued Chrona is a girl with a rather masculine/boyish sounding voice as well as physique/attire. Plus they exclusively refer to Chrona as a he in English only to prevent confusion from the not-so-trap-savvy audience first experiencing anime in North America.

If you look it up, Crona doesn’t actually have a specific gender. Even the guy who writes the manga doesn’t really know yet. It’s left open to interpretation and either side could be disproved at any time. So far, the evidence has been contradictory.
Atsushi Okubo knows if crona is a guy or girl because he is the one who made the manga which was based on soul eater animes
Actually Crona gender is unknown. The person who made this anime or manga don’t kno either. In the manga , Crona is an “It” because they don’t kno its gender. In the english dubs its a He becuase it hard for the actors refer Crona in their Statements. Plus they did the opposite of the Eng subs version. In the eng Subs (jap version) its a She. So its basically an It.

In the Japanese version it sounds WAY better when Black * Star is on his “SOUL ARE YOU OKAY RANT?” I think this voice actress sounds a little too girly but Crona’s is perfect and I still think that she’s a girl…

And I don’t get what you mean about close proximity, soul protection covers the area around her soul, It probably does like one inch around or something and unless you fly into the sky then you won’t really notice. (Medusa also could’ve hidden then gone into view once crona was beaten, *shrug*)

Crona is such a great character and a rounded one at that. He really changes as the anime goes on. And no offence if ur a Black Star lover, but i dont like him…he sounds too much like a girl, he is annoying, and not likable…someone really needs to knock him down a peg. But Crona-there is nothing-absoutly nothing- to hate about him.

Crona is a girl in the japanese sub but not the dub. They refer to him as a ‘him’ many times in the anime and once he blushes and says ‘I don’t know how to deal with girls’. Now if he was a girl why would he say that? Because if he was a girl he would already know if he was one.

I have a theory about chrona. And it concerns the debate about his/her sex. Maybe Medusa didn’t have chrona in the conventional way of making a baby. Is it just me, or is Maka’s voice acting a little… underwhelming? Her emotional parts are really unconvincing and almost too ‘smooth’ (like when she screamed Soul’s name after he got slashed up) I like everyone elses voices, (Crona’s is awesome) but Maka’s is just not working for me.

Meau, I agree with you. Maka’s voice is very unconvincing on the emotional parts, but her scream was good at the end at least when she cracked. The rest of her is pretty bad, but the SUBs are better anyways. I love it when Soul calls her a dumbass ^^

They’re both done by Vic Mignogna. ^^ He’s also Ed from FMA and Zero from Vampire Knight. XD And I totally agree, the anime itself is just all around awesome~
It is so obvious that Dr. Medusa is the witch, she even has arrows on her that look exactly like the vector arrows and her eyes still look evil. They must be stupid to not notice.

You’ll notice that Crona is refered to both genders ( she and he) so its really only your opinion on which one s/he is.

Before i watched soul eater my friend told me about crona. She told me about him because im just like him. Im just the same how i say things! I say things like “ahh to many things happen i cant handle it!’ “Its so hard to know why that guy is in love with me! i cant handle it!” Im really like crona its so silly. but in the manga they call her a girl and the manga writer purposely made chronas gender unsure

This Episode Was So Confusing… I Dont Know If I Can Deal With This Series Right Now
I have purchased most of teh Soul Eater Manga.In the back of one of them,Atisushi Ohkubo gives you a hint on why they don’t reconize Medusa as a witch.
When Medusa is a witch,her braid is twisted to the right.When she is a nurse,however,her braid is twisted to the left.
Except on Soul Eater Manga 2,Atisushi Ohkubo made a mistake while drawing and made her braid twist to the left when she a witch.He fixed it in the anime.
oh yes, because that’s a HUGE difference… cause if i braided my hair and normally put it on one side, you wouldn’t be able to recognize me if i put it on my other side. O_O just saying ^_^

Honestly? This is my third time watching this anime, and I STILL don’t like Medusa. Her character is brilliant and well put together, but making Crona hurt Soul like that <_<… That's crossing the line. He's way too hot to be seriously injured. Black*Star's entry always makes me laugh though, it goes from a really teary moment to bursting out in laughter. Even though this is only episode 8, you can tell it's going to be (and is so far) a good anime.

Would anyone know the name of the background instrumental played during episode 8, around 16:54 – 19:24? It’s where Tsubaki ovehears what happened to Soul…and then we see Maka crouched on the floor waiting to hear any news on Soul. I cannot get over just how amazing this piece is and I’ve been trying to find it – google isn’t helping much. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
